despite what we've all heard, a full-term pregnancy isn't really nine months, it is actually forty weeks!

first trimester (Weeks 1-12)

Month 1 - The placenta (the organ that nourishes your baby) begins to form. The heart and lungs begin to develop. The baby is about 1/4 inch long by the end of month 1.

Month 2 - All of your baby's organs form. A face, fingers, toes, ears, and eyes appear. At the end of the month, your baby is about an inch long.

Month 3 - Your baby can open and close its fists and mouth. The sexual organs begin to form. Your baby is now about four inches long.

second trimester (Weeks 13-28)

Month 4 - Your baby's heartbeat may be heard with a hand-held Doppler. Your baby has eyelashes, nails, and hair. Your baby is about six inches long.

Month 5 - You may feel your baby move (sometimes referred to as quickening). After a growth spurt, your baby nears ten inches long.

Month 6 - Your baby's eyes begin to pen. Fingerprints have formed. Your baby weighs about 2 pounds and is about 12 inches long.

third trimester (weeks 29-40)

Month 7 - Your baby has another significant growth spurt and is now about 14 inches long. At this point, a baby born prematurely (too early), would require very specialized care.

Month 8 - Your baby is maturing and is new developing reserves of body fat. He or she is probably a strong kicker by now, but may be getting too big to move around much.

Month 9 - Your baby can hear you. The baby may weigh nearly 7 pounds, and be about 18 to 20 inches long. In other words, "Any day now, Mom!"
