Lots of information about what's available can be found at St. Francis Baby. One of the most common questions we hear about breast-feeding is:

why do my breasts hurt?

There are a number of reasons that cause pain and tenderness during breastfeeding:

  • Engorgement occurs when more milk comes in than the baby demands. Breasts become swollen, firm, and painful.
  • Mastitis may result if engorgement is severe enough to lead to infection. Symptoms may include flu-like symptoms, increased pain, red streaking on the breasts, and/or swollen lymph nodes.
  • Yeast Infections cause a burning sensation during breast-feeding along with red nipples.

Lactation Consultants can be reached seven days a week at (864) 675-4215 from 8:30am - 5:00pm to answer any breastfeeding questions you may have. If you leave a message, you can expect a call back within 24 hours.
